Zumaya in Europe

The Zumaya project in Europe addresses the repertoire of the Mexican composer Manuel de Zumaya and the theory of his journey to Europe between 1700-1708. The European influence that the trip had on the young Zumaya is confirmed upon his return to the metropolitan cathedral when he premieres the Parthenopewith the same librettist as Antonio Vivaldi; Silvio Stampiglia.
This production is the first complete opera to premiere in North America and the first written by a composer born in the New World..

THE TRIP FROM ZUMAYA TO ITALY

The influence of his trip is reflected in the innovations present in his compositions after 1708, like his cantatas, in which he introduces the use of two Italian-style violins. These were the first pieces created in America that included such orchestration..
The Zumaya project in Europe included a collection of cantatas by Manuel de Zumaya, two works in indigenous languages, the composer's own copies of works by Vivaldi and Corelli brought to the New World, and the fusion of traditional Mexican music.
